Clamshells & Phase Boxes
Etherington Conservation Services designs and constructs various enclosures for
the protection of library collections and archival materials. Clamshell boxes,
phase boxes and other enclosures create a microenvironment for the book or
object inside. The book is protected from light damage, abrasion, the effects of
pollution. In addition, the microclimate acts as a buffer to fluctuations in
temperature and humidity.
Boxes are titled either directly on the covering material or on attached labels.
Labels can be laser-printed or stamped on paper or leather.
The Standard Phase Box protects brittle or deteriorated volumes effectively and
economically. Custom-made from high-quality, acid-free grey/white board up to
12" x 12" x 2" with title stamped in white foil.
The Deluxe Phase Box is designed for special books or for larger or heavier
items that need protection on the shelf. With acid-free grey/white board
containers mounted inside an F-grade buckram-covered case, the Archival Pak
Deluxe is custom -made in a choice of 24 colors up to 12" x 12" x 2" with the
